Plant Sale
BANGOR — The Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its annual plant sale 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at 1423 Broadway, in the USDA Service Center back parking lot. The sale will offer locally grown perennials, herbs, bare-root edible plants and trees, and flowering bushes, on a first come first serve basis.
For a cost of $5, children can decorate a flower pot and plant a flower to give Mom for Mother’s Day.

Kid Central Festival
BANGOR — BangPop! will present its the fifth annual Kid Central Festival 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in downtown Bangor.
With the help of local businesses, museums, and other arts and nonprofit organizations, families will enjoy a wealth of fun and free activities both indoors and outside. From soda making to tie dying, face painting to building your own cannoli, there will be activities for children age 12 and under.
Special guest will be Maine author and illustrator Chris Van Dusen who will read from his children’s books and autograph copies. Other activities will include include the annual Superhero Costume Contest, chalk art and Box City cardboard building blocks.
Begin the day at Kid Central Headquarters, located at Bagel Central, 33 Central St., where you a Kid Central activity map will be available.
Businesses offering activities include the Rock and Art Shop, Bangor Public Library, Good Soul, The Briar Patch, Central Street Farmhouse, Bangor Symphony Orchestra and more.
All activities are free.

90th birthday celebration
BANGOR — Dave Guthro, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, writes: “Recently, fellow priests and deacons in the Bangor area gathered for a surprise party in celebration of the Rev. Rene Lavoie’s 90th birthday.
“Born in April 1925, Father Lavoie, a Lewiston native, was ordained by Bishop Daniel J. Feeney in Portland in 1951.
“During 43 years of active ministry, his service to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland included appointments as assistant pastor in Yarmouth, Presque Isle, South Berwick and Westbrook, and as pastor in Island Falls, Millinocket, Lisbon Falls and Auburn before retiring in 1994.
“The Rev. Timothy Nadeau, pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Bangor, noted that the chalice he uses at St. Gabriel Church in Winterport was given to him by Father Lavoie. The wedding bands of Father Lavoie’s parents were used to embellish the chalice.”
Community garden
BANGOR — The Bangor Community Garden is now accepting applications for raised garden beds at 402 Essex Street just north of Stillwater Avenue and east of Broadway. Garden beds are available on first come, first served basis. The cost is $12.50. National Women Build Week
BANGOR — Women in Greater Bangor are invited to support neighborhood revitalization projects in the West Side Village of Bangor 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 2, during Habitat for Humanity’s eighth annual National Women Build Week. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor is one of more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosting Women Build projects with support from Lowe’s, Habitat’s longtime partner in the event.
National Women Build Week, held May 2-10, challenges women to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 62,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered in previous years.
“We are excited to participate in National Women Build Week,” said Lynn Hempen, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor. “This is a great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help families in need make improvements to their West Side Village homes.”

Book and plant sale
CARMEL — The Simpson Memorial Library will hold its annual book and plant sale 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, May 8, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the library. Books include fiction and nonfiction for children and adults. Plants, including a wide variety of field grown perennials, will be sold at bargain prices. Proceeds will be used to support the library.
Spring Fest
HOLDEN — Fields Pond audubon Center will host a celebration of International Migratory Bird Day and the arrival of spring, 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the center. Admission is free.

Fundraiser
HUDSON — A baked bean supper will be held 5-7 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Hudson Town Hall, Route 221, to support The Garry Owens House for Homeless Veterans.
The supper will be followed by a 50/50 raffle, auction, live band jam session and information on efforts to establish The Garry Owens House. Admission is $10 and includes the supper and jam session.
Organizers said a group of motorcyclists who either are veterans or have a family member who is a veteran has dedicated itself to helping veterans who are homeless and need a helping hand, not a handout. Hunter Safety Course
NEWBURGH — A Hunter Safety Course will held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17 at Newburgh Town Office. The cost is $10 per person. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Children 10 to 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult.Children older than 12 may attend alone, but it is encouraged that an adult accompany with them. Those under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign an authorization form on the morning of the first class.

ORONO — The Orono Land Trust is seeking volunteers to take part in its Trail Day work session at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2. Volunteers are advised to wear appropriate footwear and gloves. Work will take place in these areas:
