YORK, Maine — A portion of a popular walking path along the ocean in York is currently closed and needs repairs after it fell apart last week.
According to York Public Works Director Dean Lessard, the town was notified about visible damage to a section of the Cliff Path walkway near Harbor Beach in the area of a private club called The Reading Room.
Lessard believes the walkway began weakening during the strong January storm and last week’s strong waves were enough to make it crumble. The damage is estimated to cost between $5,000 and $10,000. Federal disaster relief funds from FEMA may help pay for it after the government allocated money to York County related to January’s winter storm.
As of now, money doesn’t appear to be the biggest problem. It’s the location of the damage. Dean Lessard said, “It’s more significant on the logistics of repairing it. It’s not an easy place to get equipment and materials to.”
This coming week town officials will continue to work on a repair plan. They’ll be in contact with Reading Room management to keep them informed.
Lessard said he hopes the walkway will be fixed by Memorial Day weekend.
