PORTLAND, Maine – The Portland Rugby Football Club will host the 13th annual Maine Collegiate Rugby Championship on Saturday at Deering High School.

Men’s and women’s clubs from Bates College, Bowdoin College, Colby College, Maine Maritime Academy, the University of Maine, the University of Maine at Farmington and the University of New England will compete for the Maine Cup at this daylong festival of rugby.

The top 15 men’s and women’s players also will be selected for all-star teams.

Last year, UMF won the men’s club championship and UMaine captured the women’s title.

College rugby is growing increasingly popular on campuses in Maine and the nation, according to a news release from the Portland Rugby Football Club.

Many of the players who have competed in the past Maine Cup tourneys have continued their rugby career with Portland’s men’s Division 1 and women’s Division 2 teams, representing the state throughout New England.

Saturday’s games are open to the public at no admission charge. Games will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Updates on the championship can be found at www.PortlandRFC.com or on Facebook.

Portland Rugby Football Club was founded in 1969 and is a member of USA Rugby and the New England Rugby Football Union.

The club will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, May 9, when it hosts a pig roast on the Maine State Pier in Portland.
