PLAISTOW, New Hampshire — An unidentified man was struck and killed by a Downeaster passenger train Friday afternoon.
The accident happened behind the Wal-Mart plaza on Route 125.
Amtrak reported the death at 2:55 p.m. The train was traveling south toward Massachusetts when a man walked onto the tracks and was killed, police Chief Kathleen Jones said.
Earlier in the day, she said, there were reports of a man weaving back and forth across the tracks.
It’s unclear whether the man was intoxicated, Jones said.
There were 84 passengers on the train at the time of the accident, according to Kimberly Woods, spokeswoman for Amtrak. None of them was injured, she said.
“We have no idea; it’s all very preliminary,” Jones said shortly before 5 p.m. “The scene is still very active.”
The Downeaster travels between Maine and Boston. The train resumed service at 4:55 p.m., Woods said.
Woods described the victim as a “trespasser.” No-trespassing signs are posted along the tracks.
