SKOWHEGAN, Maine — Skowhegan residents got a chance to address the school board Monday night about a possible mascot change.

Last month, local Native Americans asked the school board to stop calling the sports teams the “Indians.” They say the name is offensive.

At Monday night’s meeting, only Skowhegan residents were given the chance to address the board about a possible name change.

At last month’s forum, most of the people present were against the name change, saying the mascot is a tradition. However, representatives from local tribes say the name is racist and deeply offensive and they want school officials to change it.

The school board did not intend to make a decision Monday.
