ATHENS, Maine — A Skowhegan man suffered serious injuries Sunday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident on Route 151 in Athens, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Joseph Adams, 23, was heading south when he lost control of his Hyundai Sonata as he crested a small hill, Chief Deputy James Ross said.

Adams’ vehicle went end-for-end several times, crossed the Wesserunsett Stream and came to rest on the opposite bank, totaling the car, according to Ross.

Information gathered by deputies at the scene indicate that speed may have been a factor, as Adams may have been traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

Adams was alone in the car and it was unknown if he was wearing a seat belt. He was taken via LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Ross said speed and alcohol are being investigated as factors.
