BUXTON — The town of Buxton has confirmed a case of rabies in a bat that had bitten a local cat, which is currently in quarantine for observation, reports Portland television station WGME, CBS 13.
Buxton police said they recently had to kill a fox that was exhibiting signs of rabies. The fox was not tested because there was no known risk of exposure.
Police are asking Mainers to contact them if they see sick wildlife that may appear to be agitated, bite or snap at imaginary and real objects, and drool excessively. Some sick wild animals may appear tame and seem to have no fear of humans.
There are other signs, such as the animal appearing excessively wobbly, circling, seeming partially paralyzed, acting disoriented, or mutilating itself. However, most of these signs can also be indicative of other diseases like distemper or lead poisoning.
