THOMASTON, Maine — A ceremonial groundbreaking for a new Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County shelter is scheduled for Saturday.

The 1 p.m. groundbreaking will be followed by a reception and tours of the current facility at 17 Buttermilk Lane.

The current building was built in 1991. After many years of seeking to build a new shelter, the community has helped the organization raise more than $2 million, which will allow for construction of the new 10,000-square-foot building, the shelter stated in a news release.

Guests will include benefactor and organization namesake Lyman Pope.
