BREWER, Maine — A reported hostage situation called into police Wednesday evening turned out to be a hoax, according to Deputy Chief Jason Moffitt.
Moffitt said officers were called to a Canterbury Road address shortly after 7 p.m. when it was reported children were being held at gunpoint in a residence.
Police responded and secured the area, and after the homeowners came outside, police were able to determine the call was a hoax, Moffitt said.
The deputy chief said it is not clear who made the call, but police are investigating the matter further and charges could be filed.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Brewer police at 989-7003.
