OLD TOWN, Maine — A Leonard Middle School student is facing charges after he allegedly had drugs and a disassembled firearm in his possession on Wednesday morning, police said.

Officers were sent to the school shortly after 8:30 a.m. after it was reported a male student had drugs and an unknown type of weapon, according to Sgt. Lee Miller.

RSU 34 Superintendent David Walker said in a statement the student attempted to sell drugs to another student in a bathroom, and the other student quickly notified a teacher.

“We often talk with students about speaking up and I am proud to say that students immediately notified a teacher of the problem, and the teacher contacted administration within minutes,” Walker said.

Administrators requested a canine perform a search of the building, and police arrested the student, whose name was not disclosed because he is a juvenile, according to Miller.

The drugs and weapon were found in a backpack in the student’s locker, according to Walker. Administrators secured the school and hallways while police canines canvassed the building.

No other drugs were found in the building, Walker said.

The student was taken to the Old Town police station and charged with aggravated drug trafficking. Gun charges will be brought later, according to Miller. The boy was released on conditions set by a juvenile corrections officer.

“We have clear policies regarding drugs and weapons in school,” said Walker. “There are consequences and we will follow both policy and the law to ensure our school is safe.”

The student was also issued a criminal trespass warning not to return to the school. Bangor police assisted at the scene.
