GRAY, Maine — While Memorial Day weekend unofficially ushers in summer, unseasonably cold temperatures will hover over much of the state to kick off the holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service has posted freeze watches for Oxford, Franklin and Somerset counties effective Friday evening into Saturday.

According to the weather service, a cold front traversing the area Friday will bring unseasonably chilly temperatures, with Friday night’s lows expected to be as cold as the high 20’s in some spots.

Crops and other sensitive vegetation could be at risk due to the chilly temperatures.
