BANGOR, Maine — Emily Reilly said she was seeing the ball really well during Tuesday’s Eastern Maine Class A softball game against archrival Brewer.
The result for Bangor High School’s senior left fielder and pitcher was three singles and a career-high six runs batted in as the Rams snapped Brewer’s three-game winning streak with a 14-1 victory.
The game was called after 4½ innings due to the 12-run rule.
Bangor (13-1) has won seven straight and has scored 93 runs in the seven wins, putting at least 10 runs on the board in each game. Brewer fell to 7-6.
Bangor unleashed a 15-hit attack that also included three singles apiece by Lilli Wiseman (2 RBIs), Cordelia Stewart (2 RBIs) and Sarah Bragg.
Reilly said her first six-RBI game was “pretty cool.
“We’ve been focusing on hitting line drives and not getting air under the ball,” Reilly said. “I just used what we learned in practice today.”
“We were hitting everything,” junior third baseman Bragg said. “We don’t just hit strikes, we hit balls, too.”
Brewer starting pitcher Delaney Davis said she hit her spots, “but they’re really hot. They can hit almost anything. You have to give them credit. They’re really good hitters. You can’t do much about that.”
Davis was relieved by Ally Chapman in the fourth.
Bangor jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Emily Gilmore, who hit three homers in Bangor’s 18-1 victory over Brewer on April 25, drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Stewart’s soft single to right.
Bragg legged out an infield hit to shortstop, continued to second and scored when Reilly lined a two-run single to right-center.
Brewer got one back in the second when Cassy Green reached on a bunt single, moved to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch and scored on Brooke Richards’ fielder’s choice.
Bangor starting pitcher Skylar Cassum, returning after being sidelined with a sore shoulder, pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third. Her mates padded the lead with three more in the bottom of the third on singles by Stewart and Bragg, a wild pitch, Reilly’s sharp, two-run single to right and Wiseman’s crisp RBI single to left-center.
The Rams broke the game open with eight runs in the fourth on seven hits, including Reilly’s third two-run single, a walk, an error and a sacrifice fly by Sydni Cosgrove. Stewart, Wiseman and Gilmore had RBI singles in the rally.
Senior righty Cassum went three innings before giving way to Reilly, who pitched two innings to pick up the win.
Bangor coach Don Stanhope said Cassum was on a pitch count since she was coming off the sore shoulder. She allowed two hits and one run with two strikeouts and one walk. She threw 52 pitches, including 34 strikes.
Reilly (7-0) allowed one hit and no runs. She didn’t strike out anyone and walked two.
“It was a good win. The girls came ready to play,” Stanhope said. “Bangor-Brewer games are always tough. The girls are seeing the ball real well and being patient at the plate.”
The Rams did a nice job hitting the ball where it was pitched.
“We’ve worked on that a lot,” Stewart said. “We go with the pitch if it’s outside and pull it if it’s inside. We’ve worked on trying not to pop it up and I think we did a good job of that.”
“You can’t shift your defense to play one side because they can hit it the other way,” Brewer senior catcher Sam Pellegrino said. “They’re definitely hot.”
Green had two singles for Brewer.
