FAIRFIELD, Maine — A local woman drowned in the Kennebec River near Route 201 on Tuesday afternoon, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Amber Cobb, 31, was found by Fairfield police, firefighters and Maine Warden Service officials and subsequently brought to Thayer Hospital in Waterville, where she was pronounced dead, McCausland said.
McCausland said Cobb resided at the 201 Apartments on Skowhegan Road, a short distance away from the river.
The spokesman was not sure how deep the water was where Cobb was located, but the current in the river is swift.
Officials are investigating the matter further and an autopsy is being conducted at the medical examiner’s office in Augusta.
“We don’t have a lot of answers as to why she ended up in the river,” McCausland said.
