MACHIAS, Maine — Town Manager Chris Loughlin resigned at the Board of Selectmen meeting on Wednesday night.
The board accepted the resignation, effective June 5, unanimously and without comment. Selectmen also unanimously approved a severance package that includes $30,000 to be paid in weekly installments, health insurance coverage through the end of June and a letter of reference.
Asked after the meeting about the reasons for his resignation, Loughlin pointed out he works for a five-member board.
“When one [board member] changes, the makeup of the board changes,” he said, without elaborating. “It’s just the way life is.”
Loughlin said he had been considering the move for more than a year.
“[Aubrey] ‘Skip’ Carter has been wonderful to work with,” Loughlin said. “He is one of the big reasons why town government works in Machias.”
Carter said the board acknowledges Loughlin did a good job as town manager, a post he held for five years.
“He evidently has decided to move on,” Carter said.
Carter said the board does not have a replacement in mind. Other employees will take on additional duties and they will be compensated, he said during the meeting.
“That’s something that this board will get together and work out,” he said.
