PARKMAN, Maine — An Abbot man was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of his father two weeks ago in Parkman, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Zachery Grant, 38, was taken into custody upon his release from Acadia Hospital in Bangor late Wednesday afternoon, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety. Grant had been hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, according to McCausland, first at Eastern Maine Medical Center and later at Acadia.

Maine State Police detectives have been investigating the death of 61-year-old David Grant, who was found shot to death in the front yard of his home at 117 Packard Road on May 12.

The state medical examiner’s office determined that the older Grant died from multiple gunshot wounds. Working with the Maine attorney general’s office, the decision was made Wednesday for detectives to arrest Grant upon his release from the hospital.

He was taken to the state police barracks in Bangor and was to be transferred to the Piscataquis County Jail on Wednesday night.

Grant is expected to make his first court appearance in Dover-Foxcroft on Thursday or Friday, depending on the availability of a judge.

Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the rural mobile home late on May 12, where they found David Grant’s body and a seriously injured man, later identified as Zachery Grant.

David Grant was a father of three. His other children are Lucas Grant, who is serving in the military in Afghanistan, and Heather Baker of England, according to his obituary.

He also is survived by his fiancee, Victoria Gould, who lived with him, and her children, along with his mother and two brothers, according to the obituary.
