SACO, Maine — Route 1 was shut down Wednesday morning because of a single-vehicle accident, according to police.
Saco Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland said the crash occurred in the area of 761 Portland Road, and a utility pole was damaged.
Paul Rizzo, 57, of Massachusetts struck a telephone pole near the Tourist Haven Motel around 7:35 a.m., causing the wires to hang low and interfere with traffic, according to Holland.
The road was closed while utility companies made repairs, Holland said. Rizzo was not injured.
Rizzo was towing a trailer at the time of the crash. The trailer had $500 in damage while replacement of the pole and associated repair costs are estimated at over $3,000, Holland said.
The southbound lanes of Route 1 have opened to traffic while one northbound lane is open. Drivers are urged to use caution while traveling through the area.
