BANGOR, Maine — The busy morning commute on Main Street was hindered Wednesday by a gas leak near the intersection of Main and Railroad Streets, according to officials.

Bangor firefighters and police were called to the scene around 9 a.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Costello.

Costello said a construction crew performing road work on Main Street struck the 6-inch main, rupturing it.

Bangor Gas officials were already at the scene by the time firefighters arrived, and the gas crews elected not to shut the gas flow off, according to Costello.

“They opted not to shut the one gas valve off that would supply further down the city because of the readings they were getting,” the assistant chief said.

Costello said the gas line is fairly new, and the area was marked for Dig Safe.

Bangor police and fire officials quickly secured the area, closing off traffic from Cedar Street to Shaw’s Supermarket.

Costello said no area businesses required evacuation. He added Bangor Gas officials will be working throughout the day to patch the break in the gas line.

Main Street has reopened to traffic, the assistant chief said.

A manager at the Sea Dog Bar and Restaurant said the establishment’s restaurant was closed for much of Wednesday afternoon due to the gas leak.

The manager said the restaurant was hoping to open by 4 p.m., while the bar has been open for business since 11 a.m.
