MASARDIS, Maine — A head-on collision between a car and tractor-trailer Wednesday night sent an Ashland woman to the hospital with serious injuries, according to Sgt. Brian Harris of the Maine State Police.

Carla Bragdon, 53, was heading south on Route 11 in Masardis when she crossed the centerline directly into the path of a northbound 1998 Peterbilt tractor trailer truck driven by Robert Leathers, 38, of Medway, Harris said Thursday morning.

Leathers tried to brake before striking Bragdon’s 2000 Toyota Corolla four-door sedan but the two hit head-on, Harris said.

Bragdon, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was removed from her car by members of the Ashland Ambulance Service and Masardis Fire Department and transported to the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

There was no further information on her condition Thursday morning.

Leathers, who was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, was not injured, Harris said.

The sergeant said it is not yet known why Bragdon crossed the line into the path of the truck, but alcohol is considered to be a factor in the crash which remained under investigation by the Maine State Police.

Troopers Carmen Lilley and Adam Stoutamyer were assisted at the scene by Trooper Robert Flynn, the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit, Ashland Police Department officers and the Maine Department of Transportation.
