BINGHAMTON, New York — The Binghamton Mets had three pitchers combine on a five-hitter, defeating the Portland Sea Dogs 2-0 in Double-A action Thursday morning at NYSEG Stadium. The Sea Dogs took two of three in the series, but had their road-winning streak snapped at five.
Portland rallied in the ninth inning, putting two on, but Paul Sewald retired Aneury Tavarez on foul pop-up to earn the save.
Luis Cessa (4-3) tossed six strong innings, yielding three hits (all with two outs) and five strikeouts to earn the win for Binghamton. Justin Haley (1-6) suffered the tough-luck loss for the Sea Dogs, allowing both runs over five-plus innings on nine hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Aderlin Rodriguez had the game-winning hit, smacking a two-run double off Haley in the sixth inning. Robby Scott relieved Haley and stranded two runners.
Portland’s Jantzen Witte had two hits, picking up his team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the season.
The Sea Dogs open up a three-game weekend series at 7 p.m. Friday against Yankees’ affiliate, the Trenton Thunder, at Arm & Hammer Park in Trenton, N.J. Luis Diaz (0-4, 6.20) makes his 10th start of the season for Portland and Trenton counters with lefty Caleb Smith (2-3, 5.14).
