NEWPORT, Maine — A Bangor man was arrested late Thursday after allegedly attempting to break into the Newport Redemption Center, the town’s police chief said.

A citizen witnessed Eugene Young, 49, attempt to break into the facility around 9 p.m., according to Newport police Chief Leonard Macdaid.

The citizen called police and chased Young on foot after witnessing him break the glass on the redemption center’s front door, according to Macdaid.

Police arrived shortly after and subdued Young, who he was placed under arrest, Macdaid said.

Young was charged with attempted burglary and taken to the Penobscot County Jail.

Young has a history of burglaries on his record, according to Bangor Daily News archives.

In 2002, Young was charged with two burglaries in Orono, including one of the Penobscot Valley Country Club, and was found guilty two years later.
