Pelicans hire Gentry as coach

The New Orleans Pelicans have selected Alvin Gentry to be their next head coach.

Gentry, a Golden State Warriors assistant, agreed to a deal after he interviewed in New Orleans for a second time this week. ESPN reported that the Pelicans selected Gentry over NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy.

“I’m truly honored for the opportunity to lead the Pelicans as their head coach and am anxious to get started,” Gentry said in a statement Saturday night.

Gentry will remain with the Warriors through the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The series starts Thursday night.

Gentry has 12 years of NBA head coaching experience with the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat. In 2010, he led the Suns to the Western Conference finals.

Manziel harassed by fan

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was harassed by a fan at the AT&T Byron Nelson golf tournament.

Manziel’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, told Cleveland.com on Sunday that Manziel responded to the fan’s harassment on Saturday by alerting security officials at the PGA event in Irving, Texas.

The 22-year-old Manziel, a Texas native, was photographed talking to police outside the Four Seasons hotel on Saturday, and the photos began circulating Sunday morning on social media.

Burkhardt told Northeast Ohio Media Group that he and Manziel were attending church in Dallas on Sunday morning.

Irving police spokesman James McLellan said an 18-year-old male fan began harassing Manziel near the Four Seasons’ pool, which is part of the golf course property. Manziel eventually threw a water bottle at the fan, escalating the confrontation, but one of Manziel’s friends stepped in to intervene on his behalf and hotel security also got involved, McLellan said.

Police were called and officers spoke to both parties. Neither decided to press charges. Police did not detect any sign of intoxication with Manziel, McLellan said

Dodgers place LHP Rodriguez on DL

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed left-handed reliever Paco Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained pitching elbow.

The Dodgers also recalled right-hander Matt West from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday. West, 26, was 1-1 with a save and a 1.46 ERA in Double-A this season.

Mattingly said Rodriguez will travel back to Los Angeles to consult with team physician Neal ElAttrache. Rodriguez has struggled in his last several outings.

Les Miles’ son to play QB for Tar Heels

Quarterback Manny Miles, the son of LSU coach Les Miles, said he will attend the University of North Carolina.

Miles was a zero-star recruit by Rivals.com, in part due to hand and ankle injuries the past two seasons. An all-state baseball player, Miles will join the Tar Heels football program as a preferred walk-on. He said he will focus on football, but admitted it will be “hard to leave baseball behind.”

The 6-foot, 180-pound Miles threw for 1,952 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior despite missing multiple games due to the ankle injury, and led University High School to its first Division II state championship since 1988. He plans to enroll at UNC in time for the second summer session in June.
