Bangor Ballet

AREA — Bangor Ballet will perform two 19th century classical ballets, “Les Sylphides” and “Coppelia” (Variations from Act III), at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Gracie Theatre at Husson University in Bangor, and at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at the Bucksport Performing Arts Center. Both box offices open at 6 p.m.

The lively dances from “Coppelia” form a contrast to the non-narrative “Sylphides” ballet. Both ballets feature traditional choreography staged by Bangor Ballet Artistic Director Ivy Clear-Forrest. Forrest danced professionally in New York City with George Balanchine’s New York City Ballet and as a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet under Robert Joffrey.

In “Les Sylphides”, the poet, performed by Zach Williams of Old Town, dances in a variety of combinations with a group of white-clad sylphs. “Les Sylphides,” with music by Frederic Chopin, was first performed in 1908 at the Mariinksy Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, under the title of “Chopiniana”.

“Coppelia “depicts the celebration of the betrothal of two young lovers, Swanhilde and Franz, and features colorful costumes and technically demanding solo and corps dancing. The music of “Coppelia” is by Leo Delibes.

Tickets may be purchased for either show in Bangor at Thomas School of Dance or Patrick’s Hallmark Shop in the Broadway Shopping Center; in Ellsworth at SevenArts Gallery and in Bucksport at BookStacks, or purchase tickets by calling Bangor Ballet at 945-5911. Tickets are $15, $10 students and seniors age 65 and over, and $8 children age 12 and under.

‘Man and Superman’

ORONO — “Man and Superman” will be broadcast on the big screen at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Collins Center for the Arts at the University of Maine. Originally scheduled for May 14, technical difficulties forced the postponement of the broadcast of Simon Godwin’s reinvention of Bernard Shaw’s witty 1903 classic.

Academy Award-nominee Ralph Fiennes played Jack Tanner in the sold-out stage production at the Lyttelton Theatre in London. “Man and Superman” is billed as a romantic comedy, an epic fairytale and a fiery philosophical debate that asks fundamental questions about how we live.

Since 2009, NTLIVE has transmitted the best of British theater from London to cinemas and venues around the world. The broadcasts are filmed in front of a live audience, with cameras carefully positioned throughout the theater to ensure cinema audiences get the best-seat-in-the-house view. Productions are transmitted via satellite to the CCA, then projected onto a 40-foot high-definition screen.

For tickets are $18, $8 students and available at collinscenterforthearts.com or by calling 581-1755 or 800-622-TIXX.
