RICHMOND, Maine — A failed culvert along the northbound lanes of Interstate 295 will force the closure of a section of the highway, Maine Department of Transportation officials said.

The section of highway between Exits 43 and 49 will close at noon Sunday and reopen the morning of June 10, MDOT spokesman Ted Talbot said.

The 7-foot diameter culvert is 122 feet long and was installed in 1975.

Northbound traffic will be diverted to Exit 43 and detoured along Routes 197, 138 and 201 before returning to the interstate in Gardiner. The detour should add no more than 15 minutes of travel time.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on the approach to Exit 43, and a higher presence of state troopers is anticipated to enforce temporary speed limits.
