LOS ANGELES — A former FBI agent accused of stealing more than $100,000 in drug proceeds and spending it on cars, a Las Vegas vacation and cosmetic surgery for his wife has been indicted on federal charges, prosecutors said Thursday.
Authorities said Scott Bowman, 44, misappropriated drug money seized during the execution of three search warrants and falsified FBI reports and other documents to cover up the theft, forging a police officer’s signature on an evidence receipt.
Bowman was indicted in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on three counts of conversion of property by a federal employee, three counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of money laundering, one count of falsification of records and one count of witness tampering.
“As alleged, former Agent Bowman put his own greed above the trust placed in him by the FBI and the American public,” U.S. Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell said in a statement.
“Corrupt law enforcement agents not only compromise those investigations in which they are involved, but also damage the reputations of fellow law enforcement officers who are dedicated to public service and the protection of all Americans,” Caldwell said.
Prosecutors said Bowman of Moreno Valley, California, used the stolen funds to buy three cars with pricey extra equipment and a weekend trip to a luxury resort hotel in Las Vegas.
The former agent also used the money to pay for $15,000 worth of cosmetic surgery for his wife, according to the indictment.
