OWLS HEAD, Maine — An Owls Head man was flown by LifeFlight helicopter Friday morning to a Bangor hospital after a car crash that may have been the result of a medical issue.

Jon Thompson, 72, was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center after rescue workers were able to extricate him from the vehicle, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.

Thompson was traveling north on Route 73 shortly after 9 a.m. when his vehicle slowly veered off the road shortly before reaching the Rockland town line, according to Carroll. The car struck a utility pole before coming to rest in the road on the driver’s side of the vehicle with the male driver inside.

Extrication equipment was brought in to cut off the roof of the vehicle to get to the driver, who was the sole occupant.

Thompson’s condition was not immediately available, but Carroll said it appears a medical issue was more of a concern than any injury received in the crash.
