HOLDEN, Maine — Four people were taken to area hospitals after a three-car crash Saturday afternoon on Route 1A at the intersection of Charles Drive, which required the extrication of two people and closed the roadway for 1½ hours, Holden police Sgt. Gene Fizell said after the roadway reopened.
Dana Myrick, 57, was driving a convertible 1985 Ford Mustang with his wife, Goldie Myrick, 60, of Milbridge, as a passenger at about 2:25 p.m. and was hit twice in the collision that spun them around and sent debris all over the road.
Dana Myrick was in the eastbound lane, with his directional light turned on indicating his turn onto Charles Drive, when his vehicle was struck from behind by Robert Hewes, 67, of Holden, who was driving a 2013 Ford sport utility vehicle, Fizell said.
“The Mustang was spun counter-clockwise across the westbound lane, and again struck in the rear by a westbound 2012 Honda Civic driven by Evelyn Page, 78, with her husband, Gilbert Page, 77, of Bangor,” as her passenger, Fizell said. “When the Honda struck the Mustang, it spun it clockwise and backwards down the hill of Charles Drive where it stopped abruptly when it struck the guardrails.”
Goldie Myrick had to be extricated from the Mustang, which was destroyed, and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center with chest and leg injuries, the sergeant said. Her husband accompanied her with minor injuries, he said. No information about the couple was available Sunday, a nursing supervisor said.
Evelyn Page was extricated and taken to St. Joseph Hospital with chest, neck and head injuries, and her husband was taken to the same Bangor hospital with complaints of pain, Fizell said. The couple were no longer at the hospital Sunday, according to a St. Joseph nursing supervisor.
“Robert Hewes had some minor complaints of pain but refused treatment and was given a ride home,” he said.
The investigation is ongoing, but Fizell said he does not expect charges to be filed in the collision that heavily damaged all three vehicles.
Holden police were assisted on the scene by Deputy Stephen Boyd of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department, and Holden fire was assisted by Brewer Fire Department, Bangor Ambulance and Capital Ambulance.
