Looking to trim your goat’s hooves but aren’t sure how? Curious about medicinal herb gardening? Want to learn how to spin on a wheel? These are just some of the topics that will be covered at the upcoming Farm & Homestead Day at MOFGA planned for Saturday, June 13, in Unity.
A hands-on skills workshop for those interested in getting their hands dirty, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association’s Farm & Homestead Day will be held at the Common Ground Education Center of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, at 294 Crosby Brook Road in Unity.
Workshops are planned in 10 categories: animals, children of all ages, construction, DIY cookers, fiber arts, food prep, gardening, Joe Dupere skill share, caring for our bodies and other cool things you’ll want to do. All workshops are taught by local volunteers and are designed to demonstrate and exchange skills used everyday when working with limited resources in rural Maine.
“It’s a celebration of rural living, which we hope will encourage the empowerment of people with skills for resilient living,” Nancy Rosalie, a MOFGA volunteer leading the event, said.
At midday, volunteers and their participants can enjoy the potluck style picnic lunch in between workshops. All are encouraged to contribute to the lunch and the sharing experience throughout the event.
Those interested can be involved in the plant exchange as well and are asked to make sure the plants and seedlings they bring are labeled.
This event is similar to the Common Ground Fair as far as the opportunities these events have to exchange in knowledge of activities and hobbies community members use and to aid in their daily lives. However, unlike the Common Ground Fair, “all of the workshops are experiential, and people get to learn the skills by actually doing it,” Rosalie said.
For future events, MOFGA hopes to expand and host events throughout the state of Maine and not just at their headquarters in Unity.
The MOFGA will not have registration for participation of the Farm and Homestead Day and encourage all those interested to bring their friends and families. For more information on volunteering or participating at the event, call 207-568-7597 or email farmandhomesteadday@myfairpoint.net.
