DURHAM, Maine — The death of a 47-year-old woman in Durham is under investigation. Police say Sandra Corrigan of Whitefield was found dead at a friend’s house Monday.
Officials say the 911 call was made for the man who lives in the home because he recently had heart surgery and was having chest pains. But when first responders arrived they found a dead female.
“The patient’s daughter actually met us at the rescue and said that she just arrived there and that there was actually a female which she thought was deceased in a back room,” said Chief William St. Michel of Durham Fire and Rescue.
Investigators say Corrigan was a friend of the homeowner and was visiting from Whitefield. Since no one saw what happened and it’s unclear how she died, the case is being investigated as an unattended death.
Androscoggin County Sheriff Eric Samson says a search of the home showed no signs of foul play, but state agencies are involved just in case.
“As the process evolves or the investigation goes on it will point us in one direction or another, we could find that the woman unfortunately had an aneurism or we could find that there was some other element involved,” Samson said.
Samson says this was an unusual situation for first responders but it’s not unheard of. “In law enforcement there’s no such thing as a routine call but every once in a while you do get surprised with what you arrive to compared to what you were called at,” Samson said.
Corrigan’s body is at the medical examiner’s office. The autopsy was completed but the medical examiner is still working to determine a cause of death.
