Bangor rower

BANGOR — Geoff Gratwick of Bangor rowed in the 150th edition of America’s oldest intercollegiate rivalry June 6-7 on the Thames River in New London, Connecticut.

Rowing was the major sport for both professionals and amateurs in the era before football and baseball captured the American imagination. Colleges took up the challenge and in 1852 Harvard and Yale met for the first time on the water. Harvard won by two lengths. The race has continued on a yearly basis since then with breaks only during war time, according to a press release.

Gratwick rowed for the Harvard heavyweight crew at the 100th anniversary event in 1965 and returned to stroke an alumni boat made up of past Olympic and national championship oarsmen. Gratwick is a retired doctor and city councilor from Bangor and currently represents Bangor and Hermon in the Maine State Senate.
