Each week the BDN Maine Outdoors team takes a look at different gear you might need for your next outdoor adventure. For this week’s Gear Bag, we looked at the women-specific Hoka One One Bondi 4 running shoe.

What is it? The Hoka One One Bondi 4 running shoe is a maximalist shoe that Ron Lawson, general manager of Triathlete Sports, Inc., suggests for anyone looking to lessen the impact of running on their joints.

Why do I need it? The hard surface running shoe is made for running on roads but does have enough tread that it can handle light trails. Hoka is a little different than a traditional running shoe, as they have up to two and a half times more cushioning than that of a running shoe you would normally see. The soft-density, high-volume foam helps absorbs the impact of your run and keeps your soles happy. It makes it almost feel as if you are sinking into the shoe. With an internal frame, your foot will be stabilized so you’re not sliding inside your shoe. Since the shoe absorbs so much of the impact, Hoka designed a rocker to help propel your step forward. The maximalist shoe has become popular in recent months, compared to the minimalist shoe, as users believe it helps compensate for improper strides and relieves pain of the knees and feet.

How much does it cost? The Hoka One One Bondi 4 costs $149.95.

Where do I find it? The Hoka One One Bondi 4 is available at Triathlete Sports, Inc. in Bangor.

Capturing sports isn't just about the peak action shot, it's about capturing who these people are and how hard they worked to get where they are. This is what this blog will help show. Not only will...
