DAY BLOCK TOWNSHIP, Maine — Rangers with the Maine Forest Service were called to Day Block Township in Washington County, where three suspicious wildfires were reported within about a quarter mile of each other early Thursday afternoon.
The fires began around 1 p.m. along a stretch of Route 9 just west of Wesley, Regional Forest Ranger Jeff Currier said Thursday evening.
He said he believes a human element was involved because the fires began about the same time, were fairly close together and occurred on both sides of Route 9, two on one side and one on the other.
The largest of the fires was mapped at five acres and was contained as of 6:30 p.m., Currier said. He said rangers would be working well into the night to extinguish that and one other fire and planned to return to the area Friday morning.
Currier said the smallest fire was put out by Maine State Police Sgt. Tim Varney.
“We really appreciate his efforts there,” Currier said.
