NOBLEBORO, Maine — Fire destroyed a home at 724 West Neck Road on Thursday afternoon. No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries, according to Nobleboro Fire Chief Ryan Gallagher.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, according to Gallagher. The state fire marshal’s office is investigating, although nothing appears suspicious about the blaze.
Firefighters never had an opportunity to save the house.
“When I got here, there was fire coming out the front door,” Gallagher said.
Despite complications, firefighters quickly went to work.
“A live wire fell down in the driveway, but we were able to work around it till it was killed,” Gallagher said. “We were able to attack it from a different angle.”
There also were some small explosions from ammunition or fireworks, although they did not affect the response.
“By the time the first truck got here, it was pretty much gone,” Gallagher said. “I heard it going off when I first stepped out of my truck. I don’t know if it was fireworks or ammunition.”
Edward W. Carter owns the house and rents it to Eben Keller, according to Gallagher and town records.
The Bremen, Damariscotta, Jefferson, Newcastle and Waldoboro fire departments assisted Nobleboro. The Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service, Central Maine Power Co., and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
“We had good response from our mutual aid towns,” Gallagher said. “It would be hard without the mutual aid towns to be able to fight fires. They did a good job.”
