WESTBROOK, Maine — A woman who suffered life-threatening injuries Friday night when a kitchen fire got out of control remained in critical condition late Saturday in a Boston hospital, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Madelena DuDu Kassa, 51, suffered severe burns when the fire broke out on the first floor of the two-unit apartment building on Pierce Street, according to spokesman Stephen McCausland.
The name of the hospital where she is being treated was not included in the press release issued about 7:45 p.m. Saturday.
Smoke alarms went off in the second floor unit, he said. Fire marshals have yet to determine if smoke alarms went off on the first floor.
The building is owned by Memana Abraham of South Portland but she does not reside there.
Ten other people were escaped the fire Friday night. Three were treated at Maine Medical Center for smoke inhalation and released, according to McCausland.
