Recent Maine Central Institute graduate Gavin Dugas of Pittsfield is the new New England interscholastic boys golf champion.
Dugas shot a 2-under-par 70 at the Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, New Hampshire, earlier this week to score a one-stroke victory over two other golfers in the 25th annual event.
Dugas, who won the Maine high school Class B individual championship for MCI last fall, plans to continue his golfing career at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Dugas was one of three Maine golfers among the top 10 finishers at the New Englands. Nick Mazurek of Oceanside in Rockland-Thomaston shot 74 to finish tied for sixth, while Drew Long of Camden Hills of Rockport tied for eighth with a 76.
Other Maine boys golfers participating in the New Englands were Logan Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln (81), Chris Billings of Cheverus of Portland (81), Drew Holt of Camden Hills (83), Cameron Clark of Houlton (86) and Adam Hachey of Winthrop (87).
Bayley Plourde of Lincoln Academy in Newcastle was the top Mainer in the girls interscholastic competition, tying for 12th place with an 80, while Jordan LaFlume of Saco’s Thornton Academy tied for 16th with an 81.
Other Maine schoolgirl golfers to finish their rounds at the New Englands were Erin Holmes of Greely of Cumberland Center (90) and Napat Intarachumnum of Hampden Academy (96).
Katie Um of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, won the girls championship in a three-way playoff. She shot a 75.
Lippert takes Cony football post
Cony High School of Augusta has stayed in house to hire its new head football coach.
B.L. Lippert, a Cony graduate who has been an assistant football coach at his alma mater for the last 10 years, has been hired to replace Robby Vachon. Vachon resigned in April after eight seasons, citing personal reasons.
Lippert, who played quarterback at Cony and Colby College of Waterville, most recently has served as the Rams’ offensive coordinator. In that role he helped Ben Lucas lead Cony to the 2013 Class B state championship and a record-setting individual career at quarterback that earned him that year’s Fitzpatrick Trophy symbolic of the state’s top senior football player-sportsman.
Cony finished second in the final Eastern B regular-season standings last fall with a 6-2 record, then fell 28-27 to third-ranked Lawrence of Fairfield in the regional semifinals.
Hoop stars in New Brunswick
Some of Maine’s top high school basketball players have headed across the border this weekend to compete in the East Coast Games, a multisport Olympic-style event involving 1,200 youth athletes being held in Saint John, New Brunswick.
The MBR U17 AAU team, coached by Rick Moore of Hampden, will play in the six-team U17 division as part of its preparation for the AAU 11th-Grade National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, later this summer.
That team includes current or former Bangor Daily News All-Maine selections Brendan McIntyre of Hampden Academy, Andrew Fleming of Oxford Hills of South Paris, Tom Coyne of Falmouth and Riley Robinson of Dirigo of Dixfield as well as reigning Big East Conference player of the year Hunter Smith of Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft, Isaac Witham of Skowhegan and three other players from the 2015 Class A state champion Hampden Academy basketball team: Jake Black, Conar Moore and Nick Chasse.
Four recent graduates of Washington County basketball programs will join several Maritime players on a Can-Am Elite team. They include three players from Class C state champion Calais — Kyle Johnson, Andre Paul and Nathan Newell — along with Austin Seavey of Pembroke and Washington Academy.
