RAYMOND, Maine — A local man died Sunday afternoon after suffering serious burns earlier in the weekend when he fell into a fire pit, according to the Maine fire marshal’s office.
Timothy W. Small, 52, died Sunday evening in a Boston hospital where he was being treated for burns over 60 percent of his body, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a news release.
Small fell into a fire pit in his backyard around 2 a.m. Saturday but refused treatment after getting burned. He had “been drinking with friends around the rock-lined pit” Friday night, according to the release, but was alone when he fell early the next morning.
“Small managed to stagger into his home, refused medical attention and went to bed,” according to McCausland. His friends called an ambulance several hours later.
He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland before being transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
