ROME, Maine — A Chesterville teen is in critical condition after a swimming accident Thursday afternoon on Great Pond in Rome, according to the Maine Warden Service.

The male was swimming with two other teens near Crooked Island and went below the surface, Cpl. John MacDonald said in a news release.

After he was recovered by his friends, a nearby off-duty nurse was alerted to the incident and performed lifesaving measures. The male was brought by Delta Ambulance to Maine General Hospital in Augusta, MacDonald said.

The three males had been boating and moored near Crooked Island. All three attempted to swim from the moored boat back to Crooked Island when the incident took place.

One of the teens was wearing a life jacket. Maine State Police and Belgrade Fire and Rescue assisted. The incident remains under investigation by the Maine Warden Service.
