HOPE, Maine — A 22-year-old man, who moved to the midcoast area after serving jail time in Utah for assaulting a girlfriend, is being held at the Knox County Jail after police said he assaulted his new girlfriend.

David H. Bresnahan of Hope was charged Thursday afternoon with felony domestic violence assault. The assault is a felony level offense because of the April 2014 assault conviction in Utah.

The woman’s medical practitioner contacted police upon learning that she had been assaulted, according to an affidavit filed by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The woman told police that Bresnahan had become violent when he found an old photo on her telephone and accused her of cheating. He then shoved her against the kitchen counter and twisted her arm, saying he would break it unless she agreed to stay with him, according to the affidavit.

The woman said he also grabbed her by the throat and shoved her into the shower, according to police.

The woman also told police that there had been earlier unreported assaults, including one two weeks earlier when he forced her to have sex, according to the affidavit.

Bresnahan made an initial appearance Monday afternoon in Knox County Unified Court where Justice Daniel Billings set bail at $1,500 cash.
