BANGOR —  Looking for a day camp for the kids that fits a family’s busy summer schedule and tight budget? How about a free camp that children can attend for one day or several days throughout the summer?

It’s more than a dream. Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor has set up just such a program this summer, co-sponsored by Junior Achievement of Maine.

Each 9 a.m.-2 p.m. session will feature a JA lesson on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship, a museum tour, lunch and participation in a museum “artifact program.”

“This is a great day camp to combat summer learning loss,” Jim Neville, operations director for the museum, said of the Galen Cole Junior Achievers Summer Slide Program.

Each day camp will be taught by a trained JA volunteer and museum staff at the 405 Perry Road facility which has admitted more than 130,000 youngsters free since opening in 1990. Its more than 200 vehicles include 18-wheeler trucks, train cars, snowplows, snowmobiles, restored motorcycles, antique cars, patriotic monuments, military artifacts and the largest collection of classic firetrucks in the state. It is rated Bangor’s best attraction on TripAdvisor.com.

Junior Achievement has a 50-year history of inspiring the next generation of leaders, said Gary Cole, president of the Cole Family Foundation. The kindergarten to 12th-grade program uses experiential learning to inspire children to dream big and reach their potential.

The five days scheduled for the day camp is Wednesday, July 15, July 29, Aug. 5, Aug. 12 and Aug. 19.

A registration form is available at http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs130/1101761264358/archive/1121402341776.html.

The number of students accepted for each day will be limited. For information or scheduling information, contact Jill Jamison at jjamison@jmaine.org or 592-7784.
