MONSON, Maine — A dump truck crashed into and crushed a pickup truck in Piscataquis County on Wednesday afternoon, when the driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel, police said.
Harry Rollins of Dover-Foxcroft, who was driving for Haley Construction out of Sangerville, lost control and struck a pickup truck parked in the yard of a North Guilford Road residence, according to Chief Deputy Bob Young.
The dump truck crashed into and landed on the pickup truck at the residence of Alan Melia in Monson at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. It also took out a chunk of the pickup owner’s garage.
Young said the house was not affected.
James Young, who lives next door to where the crash site on North Guilford Road, said he heard a bang just before the incident occurred.
“I didn’t really see it. I just live next door and heard a dump truck banging like they do when they go over a bump,” Young said. “It had gone on the left side of the road, down into the ditch and up over a neighbor’s driveway, where his pickup was sitting and ran right over the pickup. And it took out part of his garage, also.
“Luckily, he wasn’t home at the time. If he had been there out in the yard or in the garage, it wouldn’t have been so good,” Young said.
The chief deputy said no charges are expected to be filed in connection with the crash, and Rollins suffered minor injuries. The pickup truck was demolished while the dump truck had minor damage.
Young said it appeared the dump truck driver suffered injuries as he saw him sitting up in an ambulance being treated by emergency medical personnel. He said Central Maine Power cut electricity to the area to allow police and fire personnel to investigate and clear the crash scene.
Deputy Guy Dow of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
