BANGOR, Maine — Two years ago Wednesday, an Appalachian Trail hiker from Tennessee vanished without a trace.
Despite the passage of time, the Maine Warden Service, volunteers with the Maine Association of Search and Rescue, Maine State Police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office continue to work together to develop strategies to locate Geraldine Largay, who was 66 years old when she went missing July 22, 2013, Cpl. John MacDonald of the warden service said Tuesday in a news release.
MacDonald said Maine game wardens continue to plan future search efforts and will include areas that have not previously undergone ground searches.
Largay, of Brentwood, Tennessee, last was seen on the early morning of July 22, 2013, at Poplar Lean-to on the Appalachian Trail in Maine, according to state wardens.
Largay, whose trail name was “Inchworm,” reportedly planned a hike that day to Spaulding Lean-to in Redington Township, roughly 8 miles to the north, MacDonald said.
The following day, she planned to continue hiking north from Spaulding Lean-to located in Mount Abram Township to meet her husband, who was waiting for her at the Route 27 crossing, MacDonald said.
Largay never arrived at that location. Since then, no clues have been found that could be connected to Largay in any of the searches that have taken place.
The Largay family continues to express gratitude to all the searchers and investigators who have taken the time to search for the missing hiker, MacDonald said.
MacDonald said Largay’s family remains in contact with Maine Warden Service investigators and routinely is updated about searches and any investigative leads regarding her disappearance.
A reward in the amount to $25,000 remains available for anyone who can provide information that leads to locating Largay, he said.
Anyone who has information that may result in finding Largay or information about other hikers or people in the Poplar Lean-to or Oberton Stream areas on the Appalachian Trail on July 22, 2013, is asked to contact the Maine Warden Service at 624-7076.
