MADAWASKA, Maine — A Connecticut man arrested and charged in a string of thefts from cars here last week was back in jail Monday after stealing $9 worth of returnable bottles, according to local Police Chief Carroll Theriault.
Alexander Nadeau, 20, of Willington, Connecticut, was arrested and charged Monday night for theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and violating conditions of release, Theriault said Tuesday morning.
According to the police chief, Nadeau stole a box of empty bottles from the Fraser Mansion Bed & Breakfast and cashed them in at a local bottle redemption center.
An employee at the redemption center noticed the box was labeled with the name of the B&B and asked Nadeau if he knew the owners, Theriault said.
“When he did not know their names, the employee got suspicious,” Theriault said. “They paid him [$9] for the bottles and then called the owner of the Fraser house.”
The owner then reported the bottles stolen to the police who were able to identify Nadeau with the help of the redemption center employee, Theriault said.
Nadeau was spotted later that evening by officer Nathan Desrosier at the Madawaska Tim Horton’s where he was arrested and charged, Theriault said.
On Friday, Nadeau was arrested by Madawaska police in connection with thefts from 13 motor vehicles and a burglary that took place early that morning, according to Theriault.
Nadeau is currently at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton where he is being held on a $5,000 cash bail.
