BANGOR, Maine — The National Weather Service’s office in Caribou has issued a special weather statement Tuesday evening regarding a line of thunderstorms heading toward northern and interior Maine.
Affected areas are expected to include northern Aroostook, Somerset and Penobscot counties, as well as Piscataquis county, including the communities of Allagash, Clayton Lake, Madawaska, Caribou, Mars Hill, Chamberlain Lake, Dover-Foxcroft, Greenville and Milo, as well as Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park.
The line of thunderstorms is associated with a cold front that began pushing into extreme western Maine late Tuesday afternoon and was expected to continue moving east through the evening, forecasters said.
The storms could bring a period of heavy downpours, brief wind gusts of up to 40 mph, frequent lightning and some small hail, the weather service said.
A quick inch of rain could fall during the storms, possibly leading to ponding of water on roadways and minor flooding.
Anyone who is outside when the thunderstorms approach should take shelter, forecasters said.
