BANGOR, Maine — An Eddington man who has been held at the Penobscot County Jail since March unable to post $20,000 cash bail was indicted Wednesday on charges in connection with an alleged assault on his now 8-month-old son.

Morgan Gunnell, 24, was indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury on one count each of aggravated assault and domestic violence assault on a child younger than 6 years old.

Gunnell said at his first court appearance on May 13 that the child most likely had a seizure and he did not assault the then-6-month-old boy.

Information on the child’s current condition was not available Wednesday.

The investigation that led to Gunnell being charged began May 7 when he reportedly called 911 about 9:15 p.m. and said his son was unresponsive.

The family was living in a camper parked behind the Burger King on Union Street in Bangor, according to the affidavit.

A physician at EMMC told detectives when the boy was brought to the hospital that a CT scan showed the infant had “multiple subdural hematomas” on both sides of his brain, the affidavit said.

Gunnell spoke Tuesday at the sentencing of Randall Daluz, 37, of Brockton, Massachusetts.

Daluz was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the deaths of three Bangor-area residents in August 2012 and the burning of their bodies.

Daluz, who ministers to other prisoners, has helped Gunnell during his incarceration, Gunnell told Superior Court Justice William Anderson.

If convicted, Gunnell faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 on the more serious charge of aggravated assault.

In an unrelated case, a Cumberland County man accused of carjacking a sport utility vehicle in Portland and then robbing Key Bank in Freeport on July 17 was indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury on charges stemming from a traffic stop in the Bangor area on May 29. Details about the alleged incident were not available Wednesday.

Jimmy Odong, 25, of Portland was indicted on one count each of aggravated forgery, operating after revocation, violation of a condition of release and failure to give a correct name.

He is being held without bail on the federal charge of bank robbery. If convicted of that charge, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000.
