STANDISH, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that sent two men to the hospital on Thursday, Capt. Don Goulet said in a news release.
The accident happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. near 69 Middle Jam Road when Glenn Miles, 50, of Windham swerved his green 2007 Ford pickup to avoid an oncoming vehicle, lost control of his truck and struck Stephen Carpenter, 59, a resident of that road, Goulet said Thursday. The truck then crashed into a tree, he said.
The impact sent Carpenter into the woods, the captain said, and Miles was trapped in his pickup and had to be removed. The driver of the other vehicle never stopped, he added.
Both men were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, and Carpenter had life-threatening injuries, Goulet said.
Middle Jam Road was shut down for about two hours as a result of the crash.
Speed and alcohol appear to be factors, Goulet said. He said that the accident remains under investigation.
Anyone who may have seen the accident or has information about it is asked to call Deputy John Cross at 893-2810.
