PORTLAND, Maine — A man accused of firing four shots from a high powered pellet gun at a guard at One City Center has been arrested.

The guard, Mike Conicelli, says he spotted the transient slumped over at One City Center around 5 a.m. Friday.

According to Conicelli, Anjay Narayanan became agitated and showed his weapon when he walked over.

“I put my hands up immediately and turned away and said, ‘Sir this is unnecessary just move on, just get away from my building,’” Conicelli said. “He said, ‘Oh you’re not a big man now that I’ve got my gun out,’ and I turned to face him and just said, ‘Sir, move on there’s no trouble here.’”

Conicelli says he didn’t realize the gun was real, so he went after the suspect and punched him. Narayanan got away from Conicelli, so the guard chased him while calling 911.

“I walked back to my building to enter and I saw the bullet holes, the glass shattered, and that’s when it hit me that he had a real gun,” Conicelli says. “He could have killed me.”

Police arrested Narayanan a short time later on Oxford Street. He’s charged with criminal threatening, reckless conduct and criminal mischief. Police say they have not found the Airsoft gun.
