SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Morrill Post of South Portland handed Coffee New of Bangor its first loss in the American Legion state baseball tourney Saturday, 4-3, but Bangor had already earned a berth in the championship round and will play in the final at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Earlier Saturday, Staples Crossing-Eliot Post 188 eliminated Post 51 of Oakland 7-2. The win earned Staples a Sunday contest against Morrill Post at noon at the Wainwright Complex.
The winner of that game will face Bangor for the state title.
Bangor earned the spot in the second game because it was the only team that entered Saturday’s round with an unbeaten tourney record (3-0).
The Maine champ advances to the Northeast Regional tournament Aug. 4-9 at Bristol, Connecticut.
Coffee News, Morrill Post and Staples Crossing all now have 3-1 tourney records and Post 51 finished at 2-2.
