LINCOLN, Maine — A local man faces burglary and theft charges after the alleged victims “did their own investigation,” found him on Facebook and confronted him at his home late last week, police said Wednesday.
Raymond Munson, 37, of Lincoln was issued a summons on Sunday after allegedly breaking into a home. He also was summoned on a charge of stealing drugs, said Detective Mark Fucile, Lincoln Police Department spokesman.
An intruder apparently was inside the house Saturday morning when one of the residents came home, saw a golf cart parked in the front yard and became suspicious. The resident then found Munson, whom he recognized from the neighborhood, inside a fenced-in area of the back yard, Fucile said.
When confronted, Munson allegedly identified himself as Josh Munson and as John Solomon. He also allegedly apologized for the break-in before driving away on his golf cart. The residents found an open window that Munson climbed through as well as a bag containing beer, wine, DVDs, a candle, hand cream and money in their home, Fucile said.
Using the names Munson had given them and remembering his face, the residents found him on Facebook. They went to Munson’s home on Shady Lane the next day and allegedly convinced him to return the small amount of medical marijuana he is charged with stealing before they contacted police, Fucile said.
“We never encourage people to approach suspects,” Fucile said Wednesday. “They [complainants] should contact the police. In this case, [the homeowners] did a good job finding out who it was but we always encourage people to let us investigate. It is safer. You never know if they [suspects] are armed.”
Officer Andrew Scelso summoned Munson rather than arresting him because Munson allegedly confessed to police and signed a written statement. A summons spares Munson from having to post bail, Fucile said.
Munson was convicted of possessing marijuana, disorderly conduct and operating without a license in 2009, according to BDN records. He is due at the Bangor Judicial Center on Oct. 15, Fucile said.
