CANTON, Maine — State police continued on Thursday afternoon to search the area around a mobile home on Route 108, seeking clues in the 1986 disappearance of Kimberly Moreau.
Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, would not say Thursday afternoon what prompted the search of 5 acres at 502 Pleasant St. — also known as Route 108 — but he said the search would last for two days.
The property is owned by Brian Enman, who McCausland said was one of the last people to see the 17-year-old Moreau alive before she was reported missing the night of May 10, 1986.
But McCausland said that while state police have indicated over the years that they do have a person of interest, “We’ve never identified that person.”
“This has been an active investigation since 1986,” McCausland said. “We’ve had a detective assigned to her disappearance for the last 29 years. There have been a number of searches in other areas, and thousands of investigative hours. This is just the most recent [search].”
The Maine Warden Service and Franklin and Oxford County sheriff’s departments are assisting with the search, which McCausland said would continue through Friday.
“This location is the focus for the next two days,” he said. “Depending on our progress, we will make a decision [about next steps].”
