YORK, Maine — A man is accused of trying to strangle his sister in a York cemetery Saturday night, according to York police.
After a brief search in woods near the First Parish Cemetery, Francis Gordon Howell, 50, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, according to police.
Howell and his sister were visiting a relative’s grave at First Parish around 8 p.m. Saturday when the alleged assault occurred. York police said they received a frantic 911 call from a woman who said her brother, Howell, had attempted to strangle her.
Howell had fled into the nearby woods.
York police established a cordon and searched the woods for Howell, with assistance from Kittery and Wells police departments. A K-9 from Wells also was requested to help sniff him out.
Howell was found and arrested around 9:15 p.m., police said.
He is being held without bail at the York County Jail.
