NEWPORT, Maine — A race in memory of U.S. Army Capt. John Randall Brainard, a local helicopter pilot who died in Afghanistan in 2012, will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at the American Legion Post in Newport.
Proceeds from the 5k for Jay run will go toward a scholarship fund for students who live by the same standards Brainard did and who are enrolled in ROTC or a military college.
Organizers say Brainard was known for his smile and willingness to help others feel better about themselves through his encouragement and kindness.
The registration fee is $20 for adults and $15 for children in advance, or $25 and $20 the day of the race. Checks payable to 5k for Jay may be mailed to: P.O. Box 26, Newport ME 04933.
The race will be held rain or shine.
A cookout will be held after the race and admission is by donation. For information, call John Brainard at 314-5653, Amanda Brainard at 509-0074 or find 5k for Jay on Facebook.
